2012 NECA Safety Award Winners Announced

Several member electrical contracting companies were recently honored by the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) for earning top marks for their annual safety records. Winners of the Zero Injury Awards and and Safety Excellence Awards will be honored at the NECA annual convention, Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in Las Vegas and their district meetings this summer.

Awards were based on companies’ data submitted on their OSHA Form 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) and the total number of manhours their companies worked in the past year. Entrants also detailed the Experience Modification Rate (EMR) that their insurers apply to their Workers Compensation policies, information about any OSHA citations received in 2011, and their company’s operations and best practices.

NECA Safety Excellence Award winners are selected based on a comparison of safety data for their companies with pertinent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for similarly sized electrical contracting firms. The Zero Injury Award recognizes electrical contractors who had no recordable incidents, such as recordable cases, lost workdays, non-fatal cases without lost workdays, and fatalities, through an entire year.  This year, all NECA safety  award recipients have averages well below the industry when comparing lost work incident rate and total recordable rate.

“Rapid changes in the electrical industry are requiring electrical contractors to be on the leading edge of many safety and health requirements,” said Jerry Rivera, NECA Director, Safety, and manager of the association’s safety awards program. “A contractor’s customers are demanding evidence of effective safety performance and integration of safety and health management systems to jobsite safety. Safety and health has evolved from a regulatory-driven activity to something contractors can use to set themselves apart from their competitors.”

Winning NECA companies are listed by district below. Representatives from several winning companies will participate in NECA’s first Safety Forum at the association’s annual convention in Las Vegas, Sept 29-30 to describe the different ways they made safety a workplace priority.
