Four Finalist Teams Selected for ELECTRI Green Energy Challenge
The next generation of energy innovators will be represented by student teams from four universities at the 2012 ELECTRI International’s Green Energy Challenge. Four finalist teams, Georgia Institute of Technology, Iowa State University, The University of Washington, and Youngstown State University will make their presentations in Las Vegas on September 29 at the annual convention of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
Each team is made up of construction management and engineering students who participate in their university’s student chapter of NECA. This year marks the first time four finalist teams have been chosen, as opposed to three.
“It’s a remarkable accomplishment to have four teams selected as finalists for the Green Energy Challenge,” said ELECTRI President Russ Alessi. “It shows how much awareness of energy solutions has grown for students and faculty. They understand that energy conservation and efficiency is a real economic and usability challenge for building owners and facility managers.”
Teams competing in the 2012 Green Energy Challenge selected an on-campus facility, conducted an energy audit of the building's power and lighting systems, and designed and proposed a retrofit for both systems. Extensive data and completed designs were included with their submissions for evaluation by a panel of industry experts.
Green Energy Challenge judges, including contractors and industry partners, evaluated 15 entries from top universities throughout the U.S., to select the four finalist teams. The finalists will be hosted by ELECTRI International at the NECA convention. “The students can expect a full house of interested potential employers for their oral presentations and the final award selection,” Alessi said. Finalists’ presentations will be Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4:15-5:30 p.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Competition results and finalists submissions will be posted on www.electri.org and blog.necaconvention.org.
