Session Information

Distributed Energy Systems; Design & Construction

Session Type: Pre-Convention Workshops
Location: Mandalay Bay
Speaker: Donald E. Nelson

Date: Friday, September 28, 2012
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Description:

Wind, fuel cell, and solar projects are growing rapidly. They offer the opportunity for an electrical contractor to step up to the role of General Contractor, Consultant and Construction Manager. This rapidly growing area, involves more than new technologies. It’s resulted in a paradigm shift. Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) allow new companies to generate local power that is clean, fault tolerant, and profitable for the provider and end user.
Many cities are building co-generation plants at their local landfill or septic plants using Fuel cells powered by septic gas or methane from their landfill. Solar Panels are placed on the capped portion of the landfill, and a Wind Turbine is placed at the site. Large corporations such as Adobe and Google are powering their headquarters buildings. Grocery and retail stores such as Whole Foods, Price Chopper and Walmart find they can save money while eliminating the need for backup generators. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy now produces 75% of their power requirement using renewables.
This workshop will address the technology involved and the steps required to Engineer, Procure, and Construction Manage the site including:
                    Current U.S. Energy mix
                    Global Energy Trends
