This presentation by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) provides attendees with valuable insight into electrical inspections, required permits and plan review processes. Electrical inspections are an essential part of the electrical construction process and integral to the electrical construction business. This presentation provides focus on inspector/contractor relationships and the value of communication and working together to achieve common objectives, safety for persons and property. Examples of how grays areas in the NEC are addressed and the importance of electrical inspector proficiency and certification/qualifications are reviewed. Common inspection techniques and tools are discussed with real-world examples of how inspectors effectively apply the Code to installations and systems.

Donald R. (Donny) Cook is the Chief Electrical Inspector for the Shelby County Department of Development Services. In that capacity he is responsible for enforcement of the National Electrical Code (NEC) in the unincorporated areas and several cities within Shelby County. Donny is the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) representative and Chair of National Electrical Code (NEC), Code Making Panel (CMP)-17. He is past IAEI representative and Chair of NEC, CMP-10 and NEC, CMP-14. Donny has been a member of the NEC Technical Committee since 1993 representing IAEI as an Alternate, Principal, and/or Chair. He actively serves IAEI as an officer and/or Board member at the International, Section, Chapter, and Division level. He is a member of the UL Electrical Council and active in several STP’s. Donny is an active member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In June 2010 he was elected to the NFPA Board of Directors. At the NFPA Research Foundation, he is currently chair of the Electrical Advisory Committee. He has been involved in several research projects with the Foundation. He started his electrical career at the Shelby County Area Vocational Center in 1974. He completed apprenticeship training at the Birmingham Electrical JATC and worked as an electrician, electrical contractor, electrical inspector and chief electrical inspector. He has served as a member of the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board since January 2008.
